The official USAID website (American International Development Agency) stopped working on February 1. When trying to access https://www.usaid.gov/ Users see a message about the inability to find an IP server.
This happened amid the report that the Trump administration was discussing the possible reorganization of the agency and its subordination to the US State Department, writes Reuters.
USAID is a key structure that is engaged in international assistance and development, and its independent status allows you to carry out humanitarian programs around the world (including countries that the United States do not consider “friendly” – Iran, Iraq, Cuba, etc.).
The State Department will not work in such countries. The USAID Office in Ukraine was ordered to suspend the financing of all projects.
Nevertheless, detailed instructions on how to implement the directive and whether there are exceptions, its employees do not have. USAID in Ukraine, among other things, supports the reconstruction of schools, the provision of medical services, the repair of a critical energy system, as well as initiatives to help veterans.
Earlier it was reported that the Trump administration may transfer USAID to state care.
According to one of the Politico interlocutors, the US National Security Council was discussed on the possible transfer of USAID to the State Department. The unnamed US official confirmed that this issue was discussed, but stated that there was no final decision about this.
Politico, referring to two US administration officials, also writes that the Trump team is studying the possibility of including USAID in the US State Department.
