The United States cannot change the name of the international body of water, Mexico’s authorities believe.
Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized Google for changing the Mexican Gulf name to the Gulf of America to Google Maps for users in the United States, conducting the orders of US President Donald Trump. Reuters reported it on Thursday, January 30.
Shanbaum presented an official letter facing Google, in which he argued that the United States could not unilaterally change the name of the international water body, which they used together in Mexico and Cuba.
“This change in the name can only be remembered by 12 miles of Naval from the US coast,” he said, referring to the UN Convention on the law of the sea, which refers to the boundaries of territorial water.
Earlier, Google announced that Google Maps would change the Mexican Gulf display in the Gulf of America for users in the United States. In Mexico, the name will remain the name of the Mexican Bay, and in other countries Google Maps will display the same names.
Remember, on January 20, US President Donald Trump said in his inauguration speech that he had changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to American. A few hours later, he signed the corresponding command.
