European officials began to discuss the idea of the opportunity to return to the purchase of gas in Russia as part of a potential settlement of war in Ukraine.
Financial Times writes about this.
Supporters of this idea claim that it will reduce high energy prices in Europe, encourages Moscow to sit behind a table of negotiations and gives both parties an occasion to introduce and maintaining a ceasefire.
At the same time, even a preliminary discussion of the idea of restoring Russian gas supplies to Europe has already caused a sharp reaction of Ukraine’s closest allies to the EU.
This is madness. How stupid can we even think about it as a possible option? One of the officials said.
Earlier, Türkiye invited Europe to create a gas center to help replace Russian gas. This was reported by the Turkish ambassador to the EU Faruk Kaymakchi in an interview with Politico.
According to the diplomat, cooperation in the field of energy will be central to the agenda to establish Turkey relations with the EU.
After the termination of transit through Ukraine, the Turkish route remained the only one for Russian gas affiliation in Europe.
Nevertheless, Türkiye intends to increase the proposal of Azerbaijani gas and agree with the EU to develop deposits in the Mediterranean, which still prevented a dispute with Cyprus.
We have a southern gas corridor. We have 18 billion cubic meters of gas, mainly from Azerbaijan. And we can easily expand the corridor by connecting this gas to the Mediterranean gas, ”he suggested.
Zelensky announced his readiness to provide gas transit to Europe from Azerbaijan.
The president emphasized that Ukraine “will be happy to help Slovakia and other countries with gas transport,” but only if it is not about Russian gas.
According to him, in Davos, he already discussed with President Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev the question of using Ukrainian infrastructure for the transportation of Azerbaijani gas.
Azerbaijan exports a lot, and we can also use our infrastructure if Europe really needs gas, and not Russian gas. We have never refused this, ”Zelensky emphasized.
Earlier, he made it clear that Kyiv would not agree to pump up Russian gas under the guise of Azerbaijani.
