The pace called on Georgia for new elections and limited his delegation.
The Assembly approved a resolution that requires the elimination of the shortcomings discovered during the last parliamentary elections and “to create an electoral environment that will help to hold new, in -real democratic elections in the coming months.”
The parliamentary meeting of the Council of Europe left the power of the Georgian delegation, but with the “test term” and is called the conditions that should be fulfilled to preserve the representative office.
The question of the power of the Georgian delegation will be revised in April.
114 Deputies voted in 13, and seven abstained. The Georgian delegation had no right to participate in voting.
There were three options in advance: to approve the authority, not to approve the third, compromise, which was chosen: approved, but “together with the deprivation or stopping of some rights to representation.”
The adopted resolution has the conditions for the ruling party of Georgia:
- release of political prisoners;
- Review of disputed laws;
- The appointment of new parliamentary elections.
The pace requires the “inclusive process”, all interested parties in Georgia, including the ruling majority, opposition and civil society ”in order to urgently eliminate the shortcomings and problems identified during the recent parliamentary elections and the creation of the poisonous environment, which contributes to the implementation of new parliamentary elections.
The resolution says that after the parliamentary elections on October 26, 2024, including violations of the freedom of meeting and expression, as well as the suppression of the opposition and civil society, contradict the obligations of membership in Georgia in the Council of Europe.
Earlier, the opposition parties of Georgia, which went to the parliament, but did not recognize the election results, turned to a call to the pace so as not to confirm the power of the Georgian delegation.
The current delegation of the Georgian dream at the pace consists of four deputies: the head of the delegation of Tey Tsulukiani, Mariam Lasha and Givi Mikanadze – the Georgian dream and Eka Sepashvili, a representative of a group of people recently registered in the parliament.
Before considering the status of the Georgian deputy in April, a limited part of his powers at a pace. In particular, the right to participate in the work of a number of committees, which will be included in the mission of observing the pace, to become a speaker, candidate for PACE President, heads and heads of committees and subcommittees.
The Georgian dream opposed this resolution and called on the assembly not to accept it.
The Georgian dream ceases to work in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), ”said the head of the Georgian delegation Ta Tsulukiani.
She stated that the conditions and reservations in Georgia are “unacceptable, unfair and unjustified” resolutions.
According to Tsulukiani, the demand for the appointment of new elections “violates the sovereignty of Georgia and ignores the will of more than 1,120,000 voters (voted for the“ Georgian Dream ”and is categorically unacceptable”).
To accept this warning on our part would be equivalent to the betrayal of our electorate and, therefore, the vast majority of our society … On the basis of the above, we, members of the delegation of the Georgian parliament in Strasbourg, are stopped at a pace from today, – said
At the same time, she noted that Georgia remains a member of the Council of Europe, and her work in a pace is resumed, “when an unfair attitude will change, and blackmail will stop.”
