The Trump administration has suspended the introduction of new tariffs and sanctions against the country, department spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said.
Colombia agreed to “unrestricted entry” of immigrants who entered the United States illegally from Colombia. President Donald Trump will not impose a 25% tariff on the country “if Colombia does not comply with this agreement.” CNN reports this with reference to a statement by White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt.
“The government of Colombia has agreed to all of President Trump’s terms, including the unrestricted entry of all illegal Colombian migrants returning from the United States, including on US military aircraft, without restrictions or delays,” the official said in a statement.
The Trump administration has suspended new tariffs and sanctions against Colombia.
Tariffs and financial sanctions will be suspended, but visa sanctions against Colombian officials and stricter customs checks on Colombian citizens and cargo ships will remain in place “until the successful return of first planeload of Colombian deportees.”
The statement did not say whether Trump and Colombian President Gustavo Petre spoke after they exchanged threats on Sunday.
As we have already written, the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, ordered a plane to be sent to pick up the migrants he had previously refused to accept.
