Hungary threatens to disrupt the vote for extending European sanctions against the Russian Federation.
Hungary will not block European sanctions against Russia if Ukraine and the EU guarantee that they will not interfere with gas and oil supplies in this country. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó announced this on Facebook on Saturday, January 25th.
According to him, a meeting of the EU Council of Foreign Ministers will take place on January 27, where the issue of sanctions against Russia will be considered. Szijjártó has already outlined the position of Budapest in a conversation with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas.
“In the future, it cannot continue the way we simultaneously pay the price for other people’s war and at the same time suffer from a risk to our energy security, Ukraine and/or the European Union must provide the Guarantees that in the future will not interfere with the supply of natural gas and oil in Hungary “,” said Szijjártó.
The Hungarian diplomat also emphasized that “Hungary does not have to convince” the need to extend sanctions against Russia, but it is necessary to “receive guarantees from Ukrainians.”
As you know, Hungary threatens to disrupt the vote for extending European penalties against the Russian Federation, which Ukraine is demanding that Russia’s gas moves.
Poland’s prime minister Donald Tusk has promised “consequences” for Hungary if the country will block European sanctions against the Russian Federation.
