In Volchansk, while covering the departure of his colleagues, the 68-year-old commander of the GUR assault group, Konstantin Zhuk “Nelson,” died.
This was reported on the Facebook pages of the special unit of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Military District “Brotherhood” and the representative of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Andrey Kovalev.
It is noted that Kovalev died in May 2024, but “there were some reasons to keep the secret for so long.”
Before the war, he was a professional military man, president of the National Motorcycle Association of Ukraine and one of the founders of the Kyiv “Plast”, as well as a member of the OUN since the 90s of the XX century.
During the Anti-Terrorist Operation, he was the commander of the special forces battalion “Harpoon” as part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and later headed a counter-sabotage group as part of the SBU.
During the defense of Kyiv in 2022, Zhuk was no longer of military age and not a single unit accepted him.
He couldn’t sit still. He formed and armed the DFTG “Free Ukraine” under the 112th separate brigade of the Territorial Defense Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Indeed, during the defense of Kyiv, it was one of the most effective and combat-ready DFTGs,” said Kovalev.
The Brotherhood notes that Zhuk also led several units to attract foreign volunteers and participated in managing the defense of Zmeiny Island.
