In the United States, the work of the popular social network TikTok resumed several hours after President-elect Donald Trump promised to sign a corresponding decree on his first day in his new position.
CNN reports this today, January 19.
In the United States, a law came into force today obliging TikTok’s parent company, the Chinese ByteDance, to sell the platform by January 19. Otherwise, she would be blocked, which is what happened.
However, 12 hours after the first outage, US users were able to access TikTok in the web browser and app, although the page still displayed the outage warning.
Trump today posted on his Truth Social network page that he plans to issue an executive order to reopen TikTok in the United States after his inauguration, which will take place tomorrow, January 20.
The TikTok ban law provides for the possibility of a one-time 90-day delay in blocking this social network if its sale is not completed by January 19. Trump in his message stated his intention to delay the ban on the social network “so that we can reach an agreement to protect our national security,” that is, the sale of it to a non-Chinese owner.
In his message, Trump said he would seek a 50-50 joint venture between TikTok’s existing parent company, ByteDance, and a new, American owner.
He called on TikTok’s partners to allow the app to resume operations, saying that “the order will also confirm that no company that helped keep TikTok from disappearing under my order will bear any responsibility.”
“Americans deserve to see our exciting inauguration on Monday, as well as other events and conversations,” Trump said.
In the US, TikTok has 170 million users.
