The administration of US President Donald Trump intends to conduct a large-scale immigration raid in Chicago on January 21.
The raid will last a week, the Wall Street Journal writes, citing informed sources.
The operation will involve 100-200 US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. Their main targets will be illegal immigrants with criminal records who have violated driving rules and other laws that the Joe Biden administration considered not too significant to prosecute.
Chicago was chosen for the raid for two reasons: the city has a large migrant population due to fairly lax rules, and there is a long-standing public feud between Trump and the city’s Democratic mayor, Brandon Johnson.
Following Chicago, raids may take place in New York, Los Angeles, Denver and Miami, writes WSJ.
During the election campaign, Trump said that he would carry out “the largest deportation program in American history to remove criminals,” which he would launch on the first day of his return to the White House. According to him, 15-20 million migrants will eventually be deported.
