The US Supreme Court has refused to block legislation to ban or sell TikTok.
CNBC reports this.
The judges voted 9 to 0 to refuse to save the platform, which is used by about half of all Americans.
There is no doubt that for more than 170 million Americans, TikTok offers a distinct and expansive way to express themselves… But Congress determined that divestment was necessary to address demonstrated national security concerns about TikTok’s data collection practices and relationship with a foreign adversary, the court said in its decision.
According to the judges, the risk to US national security due to the social network’s connection with China outweighs concerns about restrictions on freedom of speech.
The social network faces blocking as early as January 19. At the same time, Donald Trump may decide not to implement this law.
At the same time, TikTok is one of the biggest sponsors of Trump’s inauguration.
The evening, called the Power 30 Awards, will take place on January 19 in downtown Washington. TikTok is named as the main sponsor of this event. In particular, sponsorship fees range from $10 to $50 thousand.
In general, Trump decided to hold such a party in honor of the influencers who helped him spread his election messages.
In April 2024, US President Joe Biden signed a law banning TikTok in the US unless it was sold to an American company.
