On April 17, President Vladimir Zelensky received in Kyiv the leader of the largest opposition party in Slovakia, Progressive Slovakia, Michal Šimečko.
At the beginning of the week, Prime Minister Robert Fico invited Zelensky to meet in Slovakia, and the Ukrainian president invited him to Kyiv. Fico refused.
We are ready to receive the leader of our friends, the Slovak people. Another leader has arrived – and we are happy to count on the relationship between our states.
Zelensky assured that Ukraine is open to dialogue, including on energy security.
Shimechko responded by emphasizing that he would do everything for Ukraine to become part of the EU, because this would also be beneficial for Slovakia.
Meanwhile, the opposition plans to pass a vote of no confidence against Fico. As the Slovak publication Aktuality sk writes, Fico’s recent visit to Moscow is not the only reason for the vote of no confidence, because foreign trips and public statements by the head of government generally distort Slovakia’s foreign policy.
The leader of the opposition movement Progressive Slovakia, Šimečko, said:
Fico left Slovakia. Instead of being at home and solving problems that concern people, he flies around the world, bows to dictators, and enjoys luxury somewhere in Vietnam. This offends our neighbors and partners. He resigned from the government to be held here in Slovakia. He resigned over the management, which should take place here in Slovakia.
According to the publication, the Slovak Prime Minister faces impeachment. The joint opposition, which includes Progressive Slovakia, the Slovak Movement, the Christian Democratic Movement and Freedom and Solidarity, plans to express a vote of no confidence.
This is the first time since the 2023 parliamentary elections that all opposition parties and movements in Slovakia have united.
