After stopping the transfer of gas through Ukraine, Russia intends to buy it for Transnistria on the European spot market, the media said.
Russia ready to buy natural gas for unrecognized Transnistria. But at the same time, Moldova must ensure its submission and contracting. Kremlin Speaker Dmitry Peskov said this on Thursday, January 16.
“Moscow is ready to provide assistance to Transnistria,” Peskov told reporters in response to a request to comment on information that Russia plans to buy gas for Transnistria on the European spot market.
At the same time, he noted that “logically, actions should be taken here to ensure gas supply and contracts from Moldova.”
“So far we have not heard any statement about the readiness to do this,” Peskov added.
Meanwhile, Russian media wrote that Russia, after stopping gas transit through Ukraine, will buy it for Transnistria on the European spot market. It is said that the transactions will take place through the intermediary of Natural Gaz DC, and the funds for this are expected to be allocated from the Russian budget. In total, from January to April it is planned to buy about 3 million cubic meters of gas per day for Transnistria. This quantity should be enough to cover domestic consumption in the republic, but not to export electricity to Moldova.
According to calculations, based on the current price of gas in the Dutch TTF hub and a small premium, the cost of gas for Transnistria could be $515-530 per thousand cubic meters. Then the purchase of 310-320 million cubic meters of gas at the end of April could cost $164 million or about 16.8 billion rubles.
We remind you that on January 15, “humanitarian” gas supplies from Russia were announced in Transnistria. The negotiations were conducted at the level of the Russian Ministry of Energy, said the head of the “republic” Vadim Krasnoselsky.
In the past, Transnistria refused gas from Europe. Tiraspol hopes that the Russian supplies will soon continue.
