The Baltic Sentry mission will involve frigates, patrol aircraft and maritime drones. The military will also use “other advanced technologies.”
NATO is launching a new Baltic Sentry mission to ensure infrastructure security in the Baltic Sea. This was announced by Alliance Secretary General Mark Rutte in a press conference on Tuesday, January 14.
“I am announcing today that NATO is launching the Baltic Sentry mission. This paramilitary effort, led by Supreme Allied Commander Europe Christopher Cavoli, is part of efforts to strengthen maritime presence and surveillance in key areas for our Alliance. ,” he said.
The mission includes frigates and patrol aircraft, as well as a small fleet of maritime drones, Rutte said. The military also uses other advanced technologies.
The Secretary General emphasized the need for decisive action by law enforcement agencies against possible security threats in the Baltic Sea. He announced plans to strengthen, in particular, in cooperation with operator companies, the protection and reliability of the underwater infrastructure.
Rutte made a corresponding statement at a meeting of heads of state and government of NATO countries – Germany, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Finland, Sweden and Estonia. Today they gathered in Helsinki to discuss the safety of underwater infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.
We remind you that in November the submarine cable between Finland and Germany was damaged, as a result of which telecommunication communications between the countries were cut off.
And on December 26, three communication cables between Estonia and Finland failed. The Eagle S tanker is suspected, which may be part of the Russian “shadow fleet”.
The previous day, Sweden discovered damage to the Nordbalt cable in the Baltic Sea.
