Estonian security authorities have repeatedly warned about the risk of sabotage by Russian intelligence services.
Estonian conservatives have proposed a bill to completely close the border with Russia. ERR reported this on Monday, January 13.
The leader of Isamaa’s conservative party, Urmas Reinsalu, linked the initiative to a series of hybrid attacks that, according to him, were organized by Russia against Estonia and its allies.
“Both partner intelligence agencies and the Estonian security authorities have repeatedly warned about the risk of sabotage from Russian intelligence services,” Reinsalu said.
He recalled that Russian border guards on the Narva River removed the buoys that marked the border. The politician also mentioned a “massive terrorist attack” in December in the Gulf of Finland, aimed at destroying the Estonian-Finnish underwater infrastructure.
Reinsalu called these actions provocations on the part of Russia and said that, due to the current security situation, it is advisable to close the border between Estonia and Russia.
Estonian President Alar Karis expressed his belief that there will be no war in his country, because “the will to defend is high.”
JEF (Joint Expeditionary Force) countries including the UK, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway will increase monitoring of the situation in the region. And NATO will send ships to patrol the bottom of the Baltic Sea.
