Russia’s violations of international humanitarian law against Ukrainian prisoners of war and detained civilians will be the subject of an informal meeting of the UN Security Council on Monday, January 13. The meeting will take place in Arria format, Ukrinform report.
The event was organized by the British Permanent Mission with the support of Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and the USA.
It is expected that former prisoners of war, instructor of the National Guard of Ukraine Valery Gorishny, who participated in the defense of Mariupol, will speak at the meeting; Crimean Tatar activist Nariman Dzhelal, who was sentenced to 17 years in prison by the so-called “Supreme Court of Crimea”; human rights activist and military soldier Maxim Butkevich, who was sentenced in the Russian Federation to 13 years in a maximum security colony.
Pablo de Greiff, a member of the independent international commission of inquiry into Russia’s war crimes in Ukraine, will also participate in the event.
The meeting will start at 15:00 Eastern American time (at 22:00 Kyiv time).
Let’s recall that on January 6, Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmitry Lubinets reported about another war crime in Russia – the possible killing of three Ukrainian prisoners of war near the village of Neskuchnoye, Volnovakha district, Donetsk region.
Earlier, Lubinets reported that the Russians had shot five Ukrainian soldiers who had surrendered.
