A territorial defense division will be formed in Germany, which will be responsible for protecting key infrastructure and strategic military bases. The tagesschau reported this on Sunday, January 12.
The new unit, numbering 6 thousand people, will consist of six regiments. The division includes reservists and active military personnel.
From April 1, this unit will be subordinated to the German Ground Forces. Currently, they include three divisions – two tanks and a rapid reaction force – each with 20 thousand people. The new division will be the fourth and will focus on protecting ports, rail junctions, transport interchanges, pipelines, roads, bridges and IT infrastructure. It will also strengthen Germany’s role as a NATO base of operations.
The initiative to create the division belongs to the Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius, who presented a plan for the reorganization of the Bundeswehr in April 2024. This division will guarantee the security of the country if the other three units are deployed to support NATO’s eastern flank in Poland, Lithuania or Estonia.
Let’s remember that the Bundeswehr said that Russia could be ready to attack NATO countries in five to eight years.
