Taliban-ruled Afghanistan bought nearly $80 million worth of Russian flour last year, double the figure by 2023.
Afghanistan topped the list of countries that import Russian flour, doubling the volume of purchases by 2024. This was reported by Reuters on Sunday, January 12.
According to the agency’s preliminary estimates, Afghanistan bought nearly $80 million worth of Russian flour last year, double the number in 2023. China and Turkmenistan are also among the biggest buyers of Russian flour.
The total export volume of wheat and wheat-rye flour from Russia in 2024 will reach $300 million.
The increase in Afghanistan’s flour imports is attributed to the lack of its own production capacity necessary to meet domestic demand. The increase in purchases coincides with Russia’s efforts to strengthen ties with the Afghan government, which is controlled by the Taliban terrorist movement.
Earlier, the State Duma of the Russian Federation adopted in the second and third, final reading a law that provides the possibility to exclude the Afghan Taliban movement from the list of organizations banned in Russia.
Also, Russian leader Vladimir Putin called the Taliban an ally of the Russian Federation “in the fight against terrorism.” In his opinion, the Taliban is interested in “everything is stable” in Afghanistan.
