The European Union and the United States have decided to impose new sanctions against Venezuela. This decision was made on the day of the inauguration of Nicolas Maduro.
The United States of America (USA) and the European Union (EU) have imposed new sanctions against Venezuelan officials. Washington has also increased the reward for information leading to the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro. It was announced on Friday, January 10, on the website of the US Treasury Department and the Council of the EU.
The restrictions include eight Venezuelan officials who head key economic and security agencies that are contributing to the repression of President Nicolas Maduro’s regime and the erosion of democracy in Venezuela. We are talking, in particular, about the president of Venezuela’s state oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela, and the Minister of Transportation, the US Treasury said in a statement.
At the same time, the US State Department increased the reward to US$25 million for any information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of Maduro and the Minister of the Interior, Justice and Peace, Diosdado Cabello.
Also on January 10, the Council of the European Union decided to extend restrictive measures related to the situation in Venezuela for another year – until January 10, 2026. The bloc imposed travel restrictions on four people, temporarily removed in May 2024. In addition, the list of sanctions was expanded by another 15 people. These are members of the Venezuelan National Electoral Council, the judiciary and the security forces.
Let’s remember that on January 10, in Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro was sworn in as president for the third time in a row. He will remain in power until 2031. The inauguration took place during protests against his presidency.
The country’s presidential election took place in July last year. The opposition did not recognize their results and said that Maduro’s main opponent, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, actually won.
At the same time, the European Union also did not recognize the election results.
