Continuation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS), as the program is called, allows immigrants to remain in the country with work authorization and protection from deportation for an additional 18 months.
President Joe Biden’s administration extended the Temporary Protection Program (TPS) for refugees from Ukraine, Venezuela, Sudan and other countries, allowing them to remain in the United States with work permits and protection from deportation until 2026. The New York Times reported this on Friday, January 10.
This decision ensures that more than 100 thousand Ukrainians will have the right to stay in the United States until August 2026.
“The extension of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program allows immigrants to remain in the country with work authorization and protection from deportation for an additional 18 months after their current spring protection,” the release said.
The TPS program was introduced in 1990 to protect aliens who cannot safely return to their countries of origin due to war, instability or disaster. President Biden expanded the program in response to the war in Ukraine and crises in Venezuela, Haiti and other countries.
In the past, Donald Trump criticized this program and promised to end it, at least for some states. But the current extension makes it difficult to legally cancel before the status expires in 2026.
It was previously reported that Ukrainian refugees in Lithuania will be given a one-time payment of 176 euros.
Meanwhile, in Norway, the automatic acceptance of protection for Ukrainian refugees from six regions – Lviv, Volyn, Transcarpathian, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil and Rivne regions has been cancelled.
