The appointment was made possible by a constitutional reform of the Holy See, which allowed lay people, including women, to head the dicastery and become prefects.
Pope Francis appointed Italian nun Simona Brambilla to the position of head of a key Vatican department. He became prefect of the department responsible for all orders of the Catholic religion. The AP reported it.
This department is one of the most important in the Vatican. Officially known as the Dicastery of Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, it is responsible for all religious orders – from the Jesuits and Franciscans to the Sisters of Charity and smaller modern movements.
Brambilla, 59, is a member of the religious order Consolata Missionaries and has served as secretary of the Dicastery of Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life since 2023. In his new position, he will replace the retiring 77-year-old Cardinal Joao Bras de Avis.
Brambilla’s appointment was made possible by Francis’ reform of the Holy See’s constitution in 2022, which allows lay people, including women, to head the dicastery and become prefects.
We remind you that Pope Francis has accepted the invitation to visit Ukraine, but so far the date of the visit has not been determined.
Earlier, the Pope in his Christmas message called for negotiations between Ukraine and Russia to end the war.
