The decision on Armenia’s entry into the EU can be made through a national referendum, Nikol Pashinyan said.
The Government of Armenia has approved a bill to start the process of the country’s accession to the European Union. Armenia News reported this on Thursday, January 9.
The corresponding decision was made today at a meeting of the Armenian government. Now the document will be submitted to the country’s parliament for approval.
According to the government’s justifications, if approved, the initiative will “make the expectations of the citizens of the Republic of Armenia regarding full membership in the European Union more realistic” and will also create a working environment for discussing the this issue.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan noted that the bill itself “does not in any way mean Armenia’s direct membership in the European Union,” as the decision on the country’s accession to the bloc can only be made in through a national referendum.
“However, it is also worth noting that before the referendum, some steps need to be taken – to discuss the road map to the European Union,” Pashinyan emphasized.
Let’s remember that in 2024 the European Union agreed to start a dialogue on visa-free travel with Armenia. In addition, for the first time in history, the EU agreed to allocate military aid to Yerevan from the European Peace Fund.
