Extortions from military personnel in the amount of 30% of combat payments were collected by the commander of one of the military units in Odessa.
As the regional police press service reported, he demanded money from his subordinates, explaining this by the needs of the military unit, in particular the need to repair equipment. Those who did not want to pay were threatened with creating problems in the service, being transferred to other units or to a combat zone.
Thus, from June to December last year, the 31-year-old commander received over 400 thousand UAH.
During searches in the defendant’s car and apartment, law enforcement officers seized the money received, mobile phones and bank cards. He was informed of suspicion of extortion and receiving illegal benefits.
The serviceman faces up to ten years in prison with confiscation of property. The court remanded him in custody with the right to bail.
