The Russian invaders have been using fewer armored vehicles to carry out assaults in the most active areas of the front in recent weeks, perhaps to conserve these vehicles as Soviet supplies dwindle.
This is stated in a new report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Russian troops are reportedly using fewer armored vehicles during assaults on the most active parts of the front in recent weeks, possibly to conserve the equipment as Soviet stockpiles dwindle, ISW said.
In particular, we are talking about the following cases:
- Ukrainian military notes that Russian forces are using fewer armored vehicles and conducting fewer mechanized attacks in the Kurakhovsky direction after suffering significant equipment losses in October and November 2024;
- On January 3, a spokesman for the Ukrainian brigade operating in the Kurakhovsky direction stated that Russian forces had switched to using predominantly infantry to carry out attacks in the area over the past few weeks and were using armored vehicles only as fire support for infantry attacks;
- The New York Times, citing a Ukrainian colonel, reported on December 31 that Russian troops are increasingly using electric scooters, motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles during assaults in eastern Ukraine, possibly as part of an ongoing Russian effort to compensate for losses of armored vehicles.
It is noted that in 2024, the defenders of Ukraine destroyed or damaged more than 3 thousand. Russian tanks and about 9 thousand armored vehicles. ISW estimates that Russia will likely not be able to cover these losses in the medium term.
