The Japanese government has asked the United States to purchase up to 1,200 advanced AIM-120 (D-3/C-8) medium-range air-to-air missiles.
The US State Department has decided on the possible sale of up to 1,200 AIM-120D-3 and AIM-120C-8 medium-range missiles and related equipment to Japan for a total of $3.64 billion. This was reported yesterday by the Security Cooperation Agency of the US Department of Defense.
The Japanese government has reportedly requested the acquisition of up to 1,200 advanced AIM-120 (D-3/C-8) medium-range air-to-air missiles and other equipment, including the AMRAAM propulsion system, warheads, AIM- training of missiles 120 Captive Air Training Missile (CATM) and others.
The department noted that the sale will advance US foreign policy and national security goals by “strengthening a key ally that is a driver of political stability and economic development in the Indo-Pacific region.”
It also noted that the agreement would improve Japan’s ability to counter “current and future threats” while protecting the homeland and American personnel stationed there.
The AMRAAM is an American all-weather, medium-range air-to-air guided missile. Missiles of this class are designed to destroy air targets beyond the target’s line of sight. The only manufacturer of missiles is the Raytheon Corporation. This is the main weapon of the F-16 fighter jet. In addition, these missiles are used for the American NASAMS anti-aircraft missile system. The modified missiles that Japan will receive will hit targets at a distance of 120-180 km.
In September 2024, it was learned that the Pentagon had entered into a $1.2 billion contract for the production of AMRAAM missiles. Ukraine is also known for receiving weapons. Our country can use these missiles in the F-16 aircraft and NASAMS system.
And in December, the United States approved the sale of F-16 maintenance equipment to Ukraine.
