The attempt to arrest Yoon Seok Yeol was accompanied by protests from thousands of his supporters who gathered near the residence to block the arrest.
Officials from South Korea’s Anti-Corruption Agency entered ousted President Yoon Seok-yeol’s residence in Seoul on Friday, January 3, to execute a warrant for his arrest. Yonhap agency reported this.
“We have begun executing an arrest warrant for President Yoon,” the government’s Corruption Investigation Agency (CIO) said.
The attempted arrest was accompanied by protests by thousands of Yoon’s supporters who gathered outside the residence to block his arrest. Police have already dispersed some of the protesters, but it is expected that their numbers could increase over the weekend. There is also the risk of clashes between investigators and the Presidential Security Service.
Yoon and his legal team called the stop and search warrant “illegal and void.” Lawyers filed a motion to overturn them.
If Yoon is detained, investigators plan to take him to the CIO headquarters in Gwacheon, near Seoul, for questioning before transferring him to a detention center in the city of Uiwang. Once detained, the CIO will have 48 hours to obtain a formal arrest warrant or release Yoon.
Let us remind you that on December 3, the President of South Korea declared martial law in the country. He named the reason as the opposition, which, according to him, is an “anti-state force” that paralyzes the work of the country.
South Korea’s parliament has voted to end martial law. And on December 14, President Yoon Seok Yeol was impeached. On December 31, the court issued a warrant for his arrest.
