About 56% of Germans surveyed are in favor of the participation of peacekeepers, but only 23% of them want to see German military personnel in their composition.
More than half of German residents support the idea of sending peacekeeping forces to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire with Russia. This was confirmed by a survey conducted at the end of December by the sociological service YouGov, DW reported on Thursday, January 2.
According to the results, 56% of respondents are in favor of the participation of peacekeepers, but only 23% of them want to see German military personnel in their composition. At the same time, a third of respondents spoke against the involvement of the Bundeswehr, and almost every fifth (19%) was generally against sending peacekeeping forces to Ukraine.
NATO is currently discussing the possibility of securing a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. However, there are no signs that the conflict may end anytime soon.
In this context, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke out against public discussions about peacekeeping forces.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius also said before Christmas that the issue of peacekeepers can only come up after the parameters of the truce have been determined. At the same time, he emphasized that Germany, as the largest member of NATO in Europe and the leading economy of the continent, “cannot stay on the sidelines.”
It was previously reported that Germany is ready to send its peacekeepers to Ukraine, however, on the condition that Russia agrees to such a mission.
We remind you that earlier the media reported that the peacekeeping mission in Ukraine will be discussed at the summit of EU leaders. This idea is being promoted by French President Emmanuel Macron.
