An electric cable in the Baltic Sea between Finland and Germany may have been damaged by an anchor.
Finnish police found evidence on the seabed that the Eagle S was being towed by a loose anchor. The length of the trail is tens of kilometers. The anchor has also already been found. Photos of the vessel taken a few days ago show that the tanker is missing an anchor on its port side. This was stated by the chief inspector of the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation, Sami Paila, Reuters reports.
It has not yet been possible to establish where the ship’s anchor broke away from the chain, but Finland has already recognized the Eagle S tanker from the Russian shadow fleet as the culprit for the broken submarine cable. The investigation is ongoing.
Let us remind you that on November 18, the undersea telecommunications cable C-Lion1, laid between Finland and Germany, failed. The Eagle S tanker, which belongs to the Russian shadow fleet, may be involved in the cable damage. The ship has already been detained.
The European Union has threatened Russia with new sanctions due to damage to a submarine cable in the Baltic Sea.
