Joe Biden, the US President, regrets withdrawing from the 2024 election and believes he could have defeated Donald Trump.
The Washington Post writes about Biden’s sentiments.
Some of his aides still believe that he should have stayed in the race for the presidency, the publication notes. They hold these views despite poor debate performances and poor poll numbers.
According to the Washington Post, in private conversations with those close to him, Biden expressed disappointment that his presidency could not overcome the division in society that grew stronger after Trump came to power.
Biden fans have been saying lately that he could beat Trump.
The publication notes that Biden’s management style has drawn criticism even from his associates.
Thus, Congressman James Clyburn, who played an important role in Biden’s victory in the 2020 election, directly told the president that his approach “does not meet current political realities.”
Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, one of the most influential Democrats, noted that Biden’s decision to run for a second term was wrong:
From the outset, Biden ran on the promise that he would be a transition president, essentially serving one term before handing over power to the next generation. I think his decision to run again violated that concept, because of the theory that he would end Trump’s appeal, defeat Trumpism, and eliminate the possibility of a new era.
At the same time, many Democrats blame the persistence of Biden for Kamala Harris’ defeat, who remained in the race for a very long time, which is why Harris had just over three months left to campaign.
The final farewell to Biden’s presidency will come on January 20 when he attends his successor’s inauguration, despite Trump skipping Biden’s inauguration four years earlier.
