Every sixth child in the world lives in a war zone, which means a constant threat to his life and health.
One in six children in the world, or approximately 473 million children, lives in a war zone. The outgoing year 2024 turned out to be one of the worst in terms of this indicator. The relevant data was released on Saturday, December 28, by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
“By almost any measure, 2024 will be one of the worst years in UNICEF’s history for children caught up in conflict, both in terms of the number of children affected and the impact on their lives,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell.
More children than ever live in conflict zones or are forced to leave their homes due to conflict and violence, according to UNICEF. And their number is only expected to grow.
“Compared to the 1990s, this number has doubled,” Russell said.
The organization identified the deterioration of education in conflict zones, child malnutrition, access to medical care and the impact on children’s mental health as major problems.
It added that the situation of women and girls was of particular concern due to reports of rape and sexual violence in military conflicts.
During a thousand days of mass war, Russia deported more than 19.5 thousand children from Ukraine. We managed to bring back 1,012 small Ukrainians.
Russian troops killed a teenager in the village. Shevchenko near Pokrovsk – he died from shelling on December 11.
