In Romania, the ruling pro-European coalition consisting of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Ethnic Hungarian Party (UDMR) has set a date for repeat presidential elections.
Digi24 reports this with reference to its own sources.
According to the publication, the elections will be held:
- first round – March 23;
- second round – April 6.
The pro-European coalition PSD-PNL-UDMR has already publicly declared its support for Crin Antonescu as a common candidate. Other candidates include Elena Lasconi (Union to Save Romania, USR), Nicusor Dan (independent), Kelin Georgescu (independent) and Daniel Funeriu (independent).
The 2025 presidential elections will be repeated after the Romanian Constitutional Court decided to annul the results of the first round of elections held at the end of November.
The anti-Western candidate Kalin Georgescu unexpectedly won the first round. In particular, he stated that he would stop aid to Ukraine if he became head of state.
This election result raised suspicions about the impact of its conduct. Romanian intelligence services published documents that showed that bots on social networks could have been campaigning in favor of Georgescu. This could be due to Russian interference.
On December 6, it became known that the Constitutional Court of Romania annulled the results of the first round of the presidential elections. The second round was supposed to take place on December 8.
