The decision was made by majority vote in the Supreme Council for Information Security.
Both services were blocked in Iran after protests erupted in the country in September 2022 over the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was detained by the morality police on charges of improperly wearing the hijab.
Instagram remains inaccessible in Iran, as do Facebook, X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube – three platforms banned from use in 2009. TikTok and Telegram do not work in the Islamic Republic.
