Trump considers ownership and control of the large island an “absolute necessity” for the United States.
The Danish government has announced an increase in defense spending for Greenland after 47th US President-elect Donald Trump reiterated his intention to acquire the Arctic island. The BBC reported this on Tuesday, December 24.
Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said the financial support would be at least $1.5 billion.
Poulsen emphasized the irony of this moment, because on December 23, Trump said that for the United States, ownership and control of Greenland is an “absolute necessity.”
There are plans to buy two new inspection ships, two long-range drones and additional dog teams. There will also be funding to increase the number of Arctic Command personnel in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, and to upgrade one of the three main airports to handle F-35 fighter jets.
Note that Trump’s previous proposal to buy Greenland in 2019 caused a strong reaction from Denmark.
Let’s remember that the other day Donald Trump said he wanted Greenland to be under US control. In turn, Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede responded that Greenland was not for sale.
Trump has previously said that Mexico and Canada could join the United States instead of receiving subsidies.
Trump also threatened Panama with the removal of the Panama Canal if the country does not stop charging what he considers excessive fees.
