The Russian ship Ursa Mayor suffered an engine room explosion off the coast of Spain and sank.
The Russian cargo ship Ursa Major sank in the western Mediterranean Sea. 14 crew members were rescued, two other sailors were considered missing. This was reported by the Spanish publication La Verdad.
The ship was heading east through the Strait of Gibraltar when it experienced an explosion in the engine room. The cargo ship slowed and swerved, then began to list. On the night of December 23, 14 sailors were rescued, and two were considered missing.
Analyst Oliver Alexander wrote that the ship was carrying two Liebherr 420 mobile cranes for the port in Vladivostok, and two 45-ton hatches for the construction of the new Project 10510 nuclear icebreaker.
Ursa Mayor is operated by a subsidiary of the Russian defense company Oboronlogistics, which fell under Western sanctions in 2022. It is a mainstay of the Russian supply route to Tartus, Syria, the naval base of Russia in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Let’s recall that on December 22, the Main Intelligence Directorate reported that the cargo ship Sparta, sent by the Russian Federation to evacuate its weapons and equipment from Syria, crashed into the sea.
According to intelligence information, the remnants of the Russian contingent in Syria have completed their withdrawal from remote areas and are located in only two places – the air base in Khmeimim and the naval base in Tartus. Russia has begun moving some of the weapons and equipment from the port of Tartus by sea route to Libya.
