Canada imposed sanctions on Russian Orthodox Church leader Patriarch Kirill on Friday (July 8) as part of new measures in response to an invasion of Ukraine aimed at “Agents of Russian disinformation and propaganda“.
The measures were quickly condemned by Moscow, through the spokeswoman for Russian diplomacy, Maria Zakharova, who said:Sanctions against the patriarch could only be imposed by Satanists“. Patriarch Kirill, who has been the head of the Russian Orthodox Church since 2009, has put his church at the service of Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling him “miracle”, sharing his ambitions of conservatism, owning Russia and supporting offensive actions in Ukraine. In addition to Canada, the United Kingdom also imposed sanctions on Patriarch Kirill, 75, in June after the European Union removed him from its blacklist. “To counter the Kremlin’s disinformation campaign, Canada is imposing sanctions on 29 state-sponsored disinformation and propaganda operators and 15 entities controlled or owned by the Russian government that are involved in disinformation efforts.Foreign Minister Melanie Joly announced on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Bali.
The sanctions are also aimed at Sumbatovich Gasparyan, head of the international department of the Russian RT media group. In recent months, Ottawa has banned RT’s channels in Canada in retaliation for Moscow shutting down the Russian bureau of Canadian public broadcaster CBC/Radio-Canada. “The Russian propaganda machine must answer for its lies. Canada is committed to fighting disinformation anywhere, anytime’ hammered Mrs. Jolly, warning that.those who spread lies“will be”was brought to justice“. In total, Ottawa has imposed sanctions on more than 1,150 individuals and entities from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.
