The country, according to the future president of America, has set the fee for using the road too high.
US President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to withdraw the Panama Canal from Panama if the country does not stop charging what he considers excessive fees. Trump wrote this on his social network Truth Social, Hindustan Times reports.
“The fees charged by Panama are ridiculous, especially considering the extraordinary generosity shown to Panama by the United States,” Trump wrote.
He also warned that he would not let the channel fall into the “wrong hands.” The publication notes that Trump appeared to warn about possible Chinese influence on the passage, writing that the canal should not be controlled (by China).
“It was not given for the benefit of others, but only as a sign of cooperation with us and with Panama. If the principles, both moral and legal, of this generous act of donation are not respected, then we will ask that the Panama Canal will be returned to us in full and without question,” he concluded.
Hindustan Times recalled that the US had largely built and administered the area around the pass for decades. But in 1999, the United States government transferred full control of the Panama Canal after a period of shared management.
We remind you that, according to media reports, the team of US President-elect Donald Trump told European officials that he plans to continue military aid to Ukraine.
