The administration of US President Joe Biden will announce in the coming days the latest aid package for Kyiv under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI). We are discussing the balance of funds for the purchase of new weapons for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Reuters reported, citing sources on Friday, December 20.
According to the agency’s spokesperson, the package includes air defense interceptors and artillery ammunition, but the exact contents of the package will be announced in the next few days. The value of the package will reach $1.2 billion.
Under the USAI program, military equipment is purchased from the defense industry or partner countries rather than taken from the Pentagon stockpile. This means that weapons can take months or even years to reach the battlefield.
According to the agency, since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the United States has allocated $175 billion to aid Kyiv, including about $61.4 billion for security assistance. About half of this aid came through the USAI program.
The rest of the money was taken from existing military reserves due to the president’s appropriations powers. It is noted that the remaining presidential authority to reduce is $5.6 billion.
We remind you that on December 12, Joe Biden agreed to a new aid package for Ukraine worth $500 million. The US State Department disclosed its contents.
