The attacker spied on Ukrainian Defense Forces ships and merchant fleet in the Black Sea.
A Russian agent who installed web cameras near the port of Nikolaev to spy on ships of the Ukrainian Armed Forces received 15 years in prison. The Security Service of Ukraine reported this on Thursday, December 19.
The attacker spied on Ukrainian Defense Forces ships and merchant fleet in the Black Sea. To monitor the location of vessels, he installed several web cameras on technological structures near the local port.
These video devices are supposed to record sea and river traffic in real time, providing remote access to Russian intelligence.
During a special operation in February, the SBU discovered and deactivated the hidden cameras, and then detained the attacker when he intended to install another video device.
During the investigation, it became known that the additional task of the Russian agent was to identify the ground facilities of the Defense Forces, including military hospitals, training centers and checkpoints.
The attacker was an electrician from a local port company, recruited by the invaders remotely at the end of 2023.
He caught the attention of the Russians because of his activity on pro-Kremlin Telegram channels, where he approved the armed invasion of the Russian Federation. After recruitment, the agent contacted his Russian handler through an anonymous messenger chat.
During the search, a mobile phone with evidence of his contacts with the Russian Federation was confiscated from the detainee. Tools for mounting video cameras and boxes from them were also found.
Based on materials from the Security Service, the man was found guilty of high treason committed under martial law and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
We remind you that an agent of the Russian military intelligence who operated in the Zhytomyr region and targeted Russian strikes against the Armed Forces of Ukraine received 15 years in prison.
