In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the cause of a mysterious disease that killed 143 people was discovered: a severe form of malaria. ABC reports this in relation to the country’s Ministry of Health.
According to experts, malnutrition in the southwestern province of Kwango has left the local population vulnerable to disease. The disease was responsible for the deaths of at least 143 people in November.
“The mystery has finally been solved. This is a case of severe malaria in the form of a respiratory disease,” said the DR Congo Ministry of Health in a statement.
Since the outbreak began in October, a total of 592 cases have been reported, with a mortality rate of 6.2%.
The World Health Organization provided the country with antimalarial drugs. The organization also plans to provide more tests to diagnose cases with severe and moderate prognosis.
Malaria kills nearly 600,000 people a year worldwide, with 12% of these deaths occurring in DR Congo.
It was previously reported that an outbreak of unknown diseases was recorded in Kwango province in the south-west of DR Congo. The disease mainly affects young people.
