The SPD has set the course for planned new elections to the German Bundestag, scheduled for February 23.
The Social Democratic Party of Germany, represented by Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, plans to include in its election program a clause on refusing to provide Taurus long-range missiles to Ukraine. Political forces believe that neither Berlin nor NATO should be a “fighting party”. The Berliner Morgenpost wrote this on Sunday, December 15.
The election program must be approved at the party congress on December 17.
At the same time, the document says that the party will remain “committed to the diplomatic, military, financial and humanitarian support of Ukrainians in their resistance to Russian aggression, which violates international law, as long as necessary.” The SPD emphasizes that Kyiv should be able to conduct possible negotiations with Moscow on equal terms.
“We will not accept a peace dictated by Russia at the expense of Ukraine,” emphasized the German Social Democrats.
To protect Ukraine and ensure peace in Europe, the SPD intends to “support the training of the Ukrainian armed forces and provide weapons and equipment with “prudence and a sense of proportion.”
“This is why we support Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s decision not to issue Taurus cruise missiles from the Bundeswehr’s arsenal,” journalists quoted the party’s program.
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine is working with Germany to develop a common understanding of the importance of supplying Taurus missiles.
