This year, for the first time, the president will be elected not by the population, but by an electoral college. Only one candidate was nominated for the position of president – Mikheil Kavelashvili.
There are presidential elections in Georgia on December 14. Protesters who do not recognize the legitimacy of these elections are already gathering outside the parliament building. Sova reported it.
It will be noted that this year for the first time the president will be chosen not by the population, but by a college of voters. It is assumed that they consisted of 300 people. To elect the head of state, 2/3 of the votes of the entire composition of the board is sufficient – at least 200 members.
The board includes: 150 deputies of the parliament, members of the highest representative body of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara (20 people), the Verkhovna Rada of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia (20 members), as well as 109 member-representatives of local authorities.
Protesters accompanied the voting deputies with signs: “Slaves”, “Russians”. At the same time, Georgia’s parliament is on a yellow security level. Entry into the building is allowed only to members of the Electoral College and people invited by “relevant structural units.” Security forces were mobilized along the perimeter, and water cannons were brought into the square.
As it is known, only one candidate will be nominated for the position of president – Mikheil Kavelashvili. Voting will start at 9:00 local time and last until 14:00 near the parliament building in Tbilisi.
We remind you that the parliament of Georgia has banned masks, pyrotechnics and lasers in protests.
