The new sanctions will target Russian-sponsored disinformation operations and other activities that destabilize the world.
The European Union is proposing sanctions against a dozen individuals and three entities as part of a first package of measures aimed at countering Russian disinformation operations and hybrid attacks. Bloomberg reported this on Friday, December 13.
The sanctions include restrictions on Russian intelligence officials and groups, government officials and media entrepreneurs.
The restrictions are part of a new sanctions regime approved earlier this year that targets disinformation operations and other destabilizing activities promoted by Russia around the world.
In addition, the EU plans to increase pressure on Belarus. The sanctions package proposes restrictions on around 20 people accused of violating human rights or materially benefiting from ties to the regime of self-proclaimed President Alexander Lukashenko.
EU foreign ministers are expected to approve the restrictions when they meet in Brussels next Monday, ahead of planned elections in Belarus in January.
Let’s remember that on December 11, the ambassadors of the European Union countries agreed on the 15th package of sanctions in response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
