The sanctions complement other White House efforts aimed at the ruling Georgian Dream party, which Washington believes is increasingly pro-Russian.
US President Joe Biden’s administration has announced new sanctions, including visa restrictions for Georgia officials and their families. The decision was made in connection with a strong crackdown on protests against the actions of the ruling Georgian Dream party. The Hill wrote this on Thursday, December 12.
“The administration will announce a series of travel bans targeting those in Washington deemed responsible for or involved in undermining Georgia’s election process, as well as their family members. The names of those authorized will not be disclosed,” the newspaper wrote.
As The Hill notes, this decision is a continuation of other measures by the Biden administration, including the suspension of the strategic partnership between the United States and Georgia.
It is known that on November 28, the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, said that the country’s authorities have abandoned negotiations on accession to the European Union until 2028. According to him, the end of 2028 is the time when Georgia will be ready to start EU accession negotiations in 2030.
After that, a new wave of protests began in Georgia. Police dispersed the protesters with water cannons and pepper spray. In total, on November 28, dozens of demonstrators, journalists and security forces were injured in the clashes. Law enforcement officials also detained at least 43 people.
We remind you that the European Union is considering the possibility of suspending visa liberalization for Georgian diplomatic passport holders.
As reported, the topic of Georgia will be discussed on December 16 at the EU Foreign Affairs Council, in particular, the issues of restrictive measures will be raised. At the same time, according to media reports, sanctions against Georgian officials may be symbolic.
