The escaped Syrian leader was brought to Russian territory “in the safest way.”
Moscow confirms it has granted asylum to former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad; he was transported to Russian territory “in the safest way.” The Kremlin will not bring him to justice. This was said by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergei Ryabkov in a commentary to NBC News.
The Russian official added that Russia will continue to support the fugitive Syrian leader, whose regime has been accused of chemical attacks, war crimes, assassinations, systematic torture and enforced disappearances.
Ryabkov said these accusations come from a group of governments “that constantly interfere with other countries’ attempts to live their own way.”
Moscow hopes for a sovereign and important future for Syria, and therefore hopes for “serious consideration” of the situation in the Golan Heights by Israel. The Russian official also recalled that “the territorial integrity” of other countries “cannot be violated.”
The Kremlin is ready to consider another prisoner exchange with the United States, which would be a healthy step forward in relations between the countries, especially at the beginning of the Donald Trump administration, Ryabkov added.
Let’s remember that on December 8, Israeli ground forces for the first time since the October War of 1973 openly crossed the territory of Syria, crossing the demilitarized zone on the border. Israeli authorities called it a temporary measure.
Later, the media reported that the Israeli military had advanced deep into Syrian territory, and was now separated from the capital Damascus by about 25 km. The movement of troops is accompanied by active strikes against military targets.
