The former Prime Minister of Japan was assassinated

The politician was shot from a shotgun in his street speech. Abe was hospitalized, the shooter was jailed.

In Japan, an unknown man fired a gun at former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during his speech in the western city of Nara. Abe was injured and hospitalized, according to Kyodo and NHK.

It was noticed that at the time of the shooting, Abe was making a campaign speech at the train station.

An NHK reporter said he heard gunshots. It later became clear that the ex-premier had been injured in the chest. According to eyewitnesses, the politician fell and lost consciousness, then was hospitalized.

The attacker was arrested.

Shinzo Abe was first installed in 2006 as Japan’s youngest prime minister since World War II. He served two terms as prime minister and remained in the highest government office for the longest continuous term in Japanese history. In 2020, he retired due to poor health.
