The US President-elect proposed making Mexico and Canada states of the United States because of the trade imbalance between the countries.
Mexico and Canada could join the United States instead of receiving subsidies. US President-elect Donald Trump said this in an interview with NBC News.
“We subsidize Canada to the tune of over $100 billion a year. We subsidize Mexico to the tune of almost $300 billion. We shouldn’t be doing this. Why are we subsidizing these countries? Let them become new states in instead of subsidizing them,” he said.
The three countries currently enjoy virtually tariff-free travel under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement signed by Trump during his first term as president.

Trump previously said he would impose tariffs of 25% on goods from Canada and Mexico for their failure to stem the flow of illegal migrants and drugs from these countries into the United States.
Let’s remember that Trump proposed to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that his country become the 51st state of the United States, and Trudeau himself became its governor.
