In Syria, the rebels were able to overthrow the regime of Bashar al-Assad in just one week. They took control of many communities and forced the dictator to leave the country.
The fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria indicates the weakening of the positions of Russia and Iran, which have not been able to provide their ally with the necessary support. US Deputy National Security Adviser John Finer said this on Monday, December 9, in an interview with CNN.
He noted that Moscow and Tehran were “surprised” by the events that took place in Syria, and that it was neither an accident nor a mistake.
“The Assad regime is in fact a common Russian-Iranian project in Syria, but both partners have not been able to provide the support that is essential to the preservation of this regime, mainly explaining why he is no longer in power, Feiner emphasized.
He also mentioned that this is not Iran’s first defeat in the Middle East this year. According to him, Hamas and Hezbollah were already weakened, and Iran’s attempts to attack Israel were unsuccessful.
“Now is clearly not the best time for Iran as to what the consequences will be, I’ll leave it to others to speculate, but this is the result of the efforts of the United States and our partners in the past years that brought us to this situation,” added Feiner.
He also emphasized that the war in Ukraine “showed what an unreliable security partner Russia is for other countries.”
Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, leader of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, said the Syrian rebels’ main goal remains to topple the regime of Bashar al-Assad, as well as “building a new Syria.”
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan commented on the situation in Syria, saying that a new reality has emerged there.
