The German authorities are finalizing the procedures for granting asylum to immigrants from Syria due to the analysis of the security situation in the country.
Germany has suspended the processing of asylum applications for Syrian citizens. Der Spiegel reported this on December 9, citing the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees.
This decision is related to a new assessment of the security situation in Syria, the department noted.
Currently, approximately 47 thousand applications from Syrian citizens are being considered. German authorities have made it clear that those who have already received a response to their application will not be affected by the new restrictions.
The halt in the processing of applications is due to the review of the approaches to the situation in Syria, which is likely due to recent events in the region, including changes in political control and worsening instability.
It will be recalled that on December 8, rebel forces in Damascus declared the capital “free” from the power of President Bashar al-Assad. They said government institutions would remain under the administration of the former prime minister until the formal transfer of power.
