The US launched airstrikes in Syria to prevent the Islamic State from regaining its foothold after the fall of the government of Bashar al-Assad.
US President Joe Biden announced this today, December 8, during a speech at the White House, The New York Times reports.
Biden welcomed the fall of Assad and expressed hope that after decades of repressive rule, the people of Syria can build a new, freer society. At the same time, he warned of the dangers of instability and promised to prevent terrorists from returning to power.
Finally, the Assad regime has fallen, he emphasized in his televised speech. “This regime abused, tortured and killed literally hundreds of thousands of innocent Syrians.
According to Biden, the fall of the Assad regime is a “fundamental act of justice.”
This is a moment of historic opportunity for the long-suffering Syrian people to build a better future for their proud country. This is also a moment of risk and uncertainty,” he noted.
Biden noted that there is a clear understanding that ISIS will try to take advantage of the power vacuum in Syria to restore its capabilities.
We won’t let this happen. Today alone, American troops carried out dozens of precision airstrikes against ISIS camps and ISIS militants in Syria, he emphasized.
Biden did not detail the military action, but U.S. officials plan to hold a briefing on the issue later.
Biden also tried to take some credit for the fall of the Assad regime. He said the victory of the rebel forces was made possible by the collapse of his support from Russia, Iran and Hezbollah, which had a hand in the US.
Biden said American military aid and diplomatic support to Ukraine and Israel tied down Russian forces in Europe, helped destroy Hezbollah in Lebanon and thwarted two Iranian attacks on Israel. As a result, no one was able to help Assad stay in power.
Over the last week, their support has fallen, all three of them, because all three are much weaker today than they were when I took office,” Biden emphasized.
The consequence of this is that for the first time in history, neither Russia, nor Iran, nor Hezbollah could protect this terrible regime in Syria, he added.
According to him, “this is a direct result of the strikes” carried out by Ukraine and Israel “with the support of the United States.”
