The Russians are moving the remains of their weapons and military equipment from Syria by military aircraft from the Khmemimi air base.
The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense said that the Russians were removing ships from the base in the Syrian city of Tartus and transferring weapons by plane from the Khmeimim base.
“After losing control of Damascus amid the continuation of offensive operations by opposition forces in the provinces of Latakia, Hama and Tartus, the Russian army withdrew its warships from the naval base in Tartus, which Assad previously gave to Moscow for use as payment for his security,” – noted in GUR.
On December 8, 2024, the frigate Admiral Grigorievich of the Russian Black Sea Fleet and the cargo ship Engineer Trubin of the Russian Northern Fleet left Tartus for the Mediterranean Sea.
The Russians are also moving the remnants of their weapons and military equipment from Syria via military aircraft from the Khmemimi air base.
As GUR noted, after capturing Damascus, forces opposing Assad are moving to the coast.
“The likely loss of Russian military bases in Tartus and Khmeimim will end the Kremlin’s defeat in the Middle East,” the report said.
Let’s recall that on the morning of December 8, rebel forces in Damascus declared the capital “free” from longtime leader Bashar al-Assad. They said government institutions would remain under the administration of the former prime minister until the formal transfer of power.
On Sunday afternoon, the Russian Foreign Ministry, which is an ally of the Syrian regime, issued a statement saying that Assad had left the presidency and Syria.
