Berlin supports Kyiv “in every way possible,” but must guarantee its security, the head of the German Defense Ministry insisted.
German Defense Minister Christina Lambrecht has refused to supply Fuchs armored personnel carriers to Ukraine, citing security concerns. This was reported on July 7 by the German news service Tagesschau, citing the DPA.
“We support Ukraine in everything possible. But we must guarantee Germany’s ability to defend itself,” said the head of the German Defense Ministry, commenting on the opposition’s request to provide Ukraine with military equipment.
He called the CDU/CSU opposition bloc’s request “robbery.”
“It is irresponsible to want to plunder the Bundeswehr, especially in our time, and ignore the military advice of the Inspector General,” Lambrecht said.
Earlier, General Eberhard Zorn, acting as Inspector General of the German Armed Forces, said the Bundeswehr could not afford to move equipment from its stocks to Ukraine.
Note that more than 800 Fuchs armored personnel carriers of various modifications are in service in Germany.
Recall, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said his country could not supply arms to Ukraine in such quantities as, for example, the United States.
